Remember Charlie?
He's a PILL
I'm {attached} to him
I thought RJ was too
After another shirt tearing incident and shoe stealing-
I jokingly toyed with the idea of giving him up
{RJ wholeheartedly agreed}
I was shocked!
Before we got Charlie he said--"We're in this for the long haul, no giving up on him!"
Now he says,--"That was before we got him, I was stupid!"
So here are the cons
He chews the girls clothes {to the point of ruining them}
He jumps up on them and bites at them so that they are scared and start screaming
I feel like they don't go in the back yard as much as they would if he weren't there
Their friends don't want to play outside
Our backyard {once beautiful} is a mess
He poops A LOT {which, he's a dog, we were counting on this one}
and RJ would add--when he wakes up in the night--I have to take him out
{which, to be fair, doesn't happen much, but RJ said even so--it's TOO much!}
PROS
Despite the chewed up clothes and moments of fear...Abbey LOVES him
She would be heartbroken if we gave him away
It has taught her a little responsibility {feeding him and cleaning poop}
Did I mention she is head over heels in LOVE with this guy
{I'm worried about emotional scarring if he leaves}
So WHAT DO WE DO!?? I honestly feel I would be sad to let him go. He really sucks most of the time...but you love them anyway! I get attached easily and quickly {but I think I un-attach just as quickly...?} But now that I know RJ's true feelings, I feel like it's not going to get better. {He's the one I was counting on to truly love the little guy
and TRAIN him...he's the animal LOVER!}

You guys sound exactly like me and Brent. He's the animal lover and I'm sort of indifferent. I think that you should get rid of him. Based on your post. I don't think it would scar her at all. I think as parents we worry a little too much about that but in all honesty. It's not going to be the only puppy that she has. Apparently my parents had a dog that died when I was 5 that I loved and all I remember is the day that the dog was put to sleep and I'm not sad about it and I only remember it because it was made into such a big deal. If you do it and act like it's no big deal then it's less likely to stick out in her mind. Just tell her that she needs to share and there's other little girls that need their turn and leave it at that. Good luck!!
Hmm what about trying obedience school to weed out the issues If he didn't chew everything or jump up would you want him more? Tricky stuff and totaly sad --Luckers is at my parents and has been since almost a year ago My girls still ask for him and pray for him daily
He's still a puppy. Puppy's destroy!! My little sis. has a beagle...I think he's a pain in the butt but he's gotten better with time. If Charlie were a girl you could mate the little fetchers and make some $$$$!! Good luck deciding.
ummm.... We had 2 puppies once, I loved them but I'm sure they were crazy. My mom told me they ran away (I bought it) about ten years later I found out she gave them away. Bottum line I wasn't scarred. Do what you feel is best either train the thing, put it on a puppy line so the kids can play in the backyard and he won't "get" them or send him on his way. Ha ha ha
Uuuuuuuaaaaghhhhhh. So hard. I have to say that I am not an animal lover. The closest I get is a bird feeder outside! ha ha pathetic. But, Fox Cove doesn't have many options either. That's a tuffy, but I would have to say that I would as kindly as possible try to make the dog go away ;)
This is hard one! I am sorry you have to make a decision like that. My poor kids will probably never get a pet just because of the extra work they require. Hope you are able to figure it out. Sorry about not texting you back last saturday, it was a crazy busy day. We missed ya but Mish liked your idea of a 5yr reunion and me too. So you up to taking on the task of planning it?? haha! And to answer your question from your comment, taylors b-day is june 6. I cant believe I will be planning a 1st b-day party before I know it. Your little "Jo's" b-day party looked so fun. I cant believe she is already 3! Wow!
OH Rach!! I know the feeling. To train a dog it takes awhile. You have to at least give Charlie 6 months! He is a puppy so they like to chew. Puppies are cute but a lot of work!!! They get easier 6 months to a year. Good Luck!!
Two words: Indoor cat. (Male and neutered)
When I first read your post about getting the dog, I thought - I wish I could have talked you out of it first! Don't get me wrong, I had a dog growing up and I loved her, but they are so much more work then cats.
So I guess what I'm saying is, I think she would probably be sad if you had to get rid of the puppy, but maybe a cat instead someday? Good luck, that's not an easy decision. He's an adorable puppy.
Thanks guys---
Sarah I'd be all over a cat, but I'm ALLERGIC :(
They are sooo much easier
I think we should try to train him and give him more time, we'll see if RJ will feel the same
Rach, we got a dog for Christmas too. We need to talk!!
Puppies will be puppies! It's like having another kid that's for sure! The 1st year is the hardest so if ya can make it past that then you will probably be glad you did! We have to dogs (small) and my kids would be hear broken if we ever got rid of them! Good luck!
I say give him a little longer but some dogs are just hyper and overwhelming dogs no matter what you do. If you do decide to give him up next time go for more of a lap dog type. Call me I have lots of suggestions!
Well even though we gave our charlie away... I always think about the movie "Marley". Years from now you will look back at all these crazy times and laugh. Just stick with it. Life is about mastering our skills. (I know its easier for me to say because I am not in your shoes). Its good to vent though. And tell RJ he is a turd.
